Performance Information

CD drive performance is measured by how quickly the drive can copy a 74-minute audio CD. A standard 1x CD recorder can record an entire 74-minute audio CD (650 MB) in 74 minutes.

Speed
Description
6x

CD-R—Your ZipCD drive can record a full CD six times faster than a standard 1x CD recorder; therefore, your ZipCD drive can record a full CD in about 13 minutes.

4x
CD-RW—Your ZipCD drive can create a full rewritable CD four times faster than a standard 1x CD recorder; therefore, your ZipCD drive can create a full rewritable CD in about 19 minutes.*
24x
CD Read—Your ZipCD drive can read data from a CD-ROM 24 times faster than a standard 1x CD-ROM.
4x
DVD Read Only—Your ZipCD drive can read data from a DVD-ROM four times faster than a standard 1x DVD-ROM.
DAE
12x

Digital Audio Extraction (DAE) Rate** —Your ZipCD drive can extract digital audio from an audio CD 12 times faster than a standard 1x CD-ROM. For more information on digital audio extraction, visit the troubleshooting section.

* Assuming that the CD-RW media is preformatted.

**NOTE: Many CD-ROM drives do not support DAE at all; others do, but not very well. Few (if any) high speed CD-ROM drives can extract audio successfully at or even near their top-rated data speed. Unsuccessful audio extraction is easy to detect: it sounds bad (clicks, pops, or hissing within the track).

Drive Controls and Indicators

Your ZipCD drive has controls and jacks on the front and back panel of the drive that are labeled with various indicators. The following section describes these controls and indicators.

Controls and Jacks

  1. Head Phone Jack
  2. Volume
  3. Emergency Eject
  4. Status LED
  5. Eject Button

  1. Not Used
  2. Digital Audio Out
  3. Analog Audio Out
  4. Jumper Block
  5. IDE Connector
  6. Power Connector

NOTE: Iomega provides the cable for the analog audio out connector only. Although the digital audio out (SP-DIF) connector provides better sound quality, it is not supported by many sound cards. Check your sound card's owner's manual for compatibility information.

LED Status Lights

The ZipCD drive has one LED indicator light on the front of the drive that shows the status of the drive. See the front panel illustration, above, for the location of the status LED.

The Status LED either shines steadily or blinks irregularly when the disc or disc tray is being accessed. If your drive is not working properly and the LED is blinking slowly and regularly, your disc is either not readable or you are experiencing drive problems.

The following table lists some of the drive functions and error messages that the status LED indicates:

General Status LED
LED Function
Solid Orange Disc is being accessed
Blinking Orange (irregular) Disc is being accessed
Blinking Orange (slow, regular) Disc not readable
